DEDON STORY

A REVOLUTION IN OUTDOOR LIVING

CREATING ICONS FOR THE OUTDOORS

It began thirty years ago with the creation of a groundbreaking fiber. Explorers by nature, DEDON went searching for artisans skillful enough to weave this fiber into the world’s most luxurious outdoor designs. The journey led to the Philippine Island of Cebu, where DEDON launched its first furniture manufacturing facility twenty years ago. What fol- lowed was a revolution in outdoor furniture. Owning and operating its own furniture production, including fiber extrusion at its headquarters in Northern Ger- many, has enabled DEDON to experiment, explore and create without constraint. Setting the standard for quality, comfort and iconic design, DEDON has changed the way we live outdoors.

Working closely with some of the world’s leading designers, DEDON has been raising the bar for design and innovation in outdoor furniture since the beginning. LOUNGE, the first truly modular outdoor lounge system, was a game-changer. Signature pieces such as ORBIT, NESTREST and the MBRACE rocker have introduced new ways to enjoy life under the open skies. Each of these pieces, and many others, are characterized by such creativity, innovation and uncompromising attention to detail that they have achieved the status of icons for the outdoors.

THE ART OF WEAVING — EACH AND EVERY PIECE OF WOVEN DEDON FURNITURE IS UNIQUE

DEDON’s master weavers, among the most talented in the world, are just one more way the company sets itself apart. It was the legendary skill of these weavers that first attracted DEDON to the Philippine island of Cebu Island. Their creativity is reflected in weaving patterns of incomparable intricacy, innovation and artfulness. Indeed, each and every piece of handwoven DEDON furniture is a unique creation, the embodiment of modern technology and centuries-old craftsmanship.

ANCIENT HANDCRAFT MEETS MODERN TECHNOLOGY

Unique within the outdoor industry, DEDON owns and operates the entire value chain of its handwoven outdoor furniture. While other brands outsource to distant suppli- ers, DEDON lovingly oversees every aspect of its woven products’ creation, from design to delivery. This ensures levels of quality and value that can’t be matched. It begins with DEDON Fiber. Researched, developed and manufactured at DEDON’s state-of-the-art production facilities in Northern Germany, DEDON Fiber is unrivaled for resilience, color-fastness and strength. Each new profile of DEDON Fiber is tested in the lab for resistance to UV rays, saltwater, chlorine, sunscreen and extremes of temperatures. When it has proven its quality, the fiber is sent to Cebu island in the Philippines, home to DEDON’s master weavers.

THE DEDON FIBER ADVANTAGES

DEDON FIBER: A ‘LIVING’ MATERIAL

Interview with Nils Kettering, Fiber Division Director July 2020

Unique within the outdoor industry, DEDON owns and operates both its furniture and its fiber production. This allows us to bring our fiber specialists and world-class designers together to develop innovative new fiber colors, profiles, textures and effects. More than just a material, DEDON Fiber becomes the expression of a collection’s soul. Overseeing this process is the ultimate fiber expert, Nils Kettering. DEDON’s Fiber Division Director, Nils has been with the company for more than 15 years.

After such a long time, what still fascinates you about working on DEDON Fiber? Actually, my job only gets more fascinating. I collaborate with leading international designers on every new fiber. I work on bold innovations such as our new EcoCycle Fiber. I oversee a state-of-the-art production facility that produces zero waste. But what fascinates me most is the sheer variety of design options—shapes, structures, colors, haptics—my team and I develop. Fibers with metallic shimmers; fibers with a velvety-soft touch, like those of our RILLY collection; fibers that imitate natural materials in their beautiful imperfection—the list goes on. The development and testing process for each new fiber takes 12 to 18 months, but it’s always worth it to see our ideas become reality and end up in the most beautiful gardens in the world!

What is your development credo for DEDON Fiber? For me, DEDON Fiber is a ‘living’ material. Even if the raw material is synthetic, the final result should always look and feel vibrant. We achieve this, in part, by carefully controlling 95% of each production run while allowing 5% to be random. This means every strand of fiber is truly unique, with subtle optical and haptical differences both within the fiber and between fibers from different runs. It takes a lot of work and know-how to achieve this, but we have always insisted on it. Along with our unri- valed quality standards, it’s what differentiates DEDON Fiber from the rest. Looking into the future, how is DEDON Fiber developing? In 2021, we launch our new EcoCycle Fiber, which is made with renewable raw material derived from sugar- cane. DEDON is the first in the industry to create such a fiber, and this is just the beginning. I won’t say more, except that you can expect new looks, textures, haptics and effects, along with the unrivaled strength and weath- erability for which DEDON has always been known.

MATERIALS

THE HIGHEST STANDARDS OF QUALITY

HANDMADE CERAMICS Laboratorio Pesaro, Italy

DEDON works exclusively with suppliers who share its passion for quality, sourcing only the highest-quality materials from its worldwide network. For items not produced in-house, DEDON collaborates with makers and manufacturers at the top of their craft, capable of transforming these materials into outstanding products. For its teak and upholstery collections, as well as for ceramics and aluminum castings, DEDON partners with companies specialized in those materials for decades. For fabrics and sling materials, DEDON works with carefully chosen ateliers in Italy, Belgium and the United States. To complete its range of surfaces and offer the widest range of styling possibilities, DEDON uses HPL, glass and powder coatings in a versatile range of colors and finishes. But whatever the material, whether raw or refined, DEDON ensures the same standards of quality it applies to its own fiber—the highest.

15

ROPE

The traditional Italian maritime rope that DEDON uses for RILLY and SEALINE is a fresh interpreta- tion of the brand’s unique weaving heritage. Master colorist Giulio Ridolfo developed sophisticated yarn combinations for the rope, which is characterized by an appealing, textile touch. Made of polypropylene yarns, with tenacity fillers for extra strength, the rope is weatherproof, non-absorbent and ideally suited for outdoor use. It offers excellent light fastness (grade 6), color fastness (against both chlorine and saltwater) and resistance to physical stress, UV radiation, mold and more.

FIBER

RILLY Taupe melange rope

Researched, developed, manufactured and quality- tested at our state-of-the-art production facilities in Northern Germany, DEDON Fiber (HDPE) is unrivaled for its durability, weather-fastness and luxuriousness of color, texture and touch. Strong enough to with- stand the harshest conditions yet supple enough to be woven into artful patterns by our master weavers, it has revolutionized outdoor furniture. The final prod- uct is non-toxic, non-polluting and fully recyclable. It is maintenance-free, easy to clean and recommended for indoor and outdoor use.

TEAK

Teak is one of the world’s most precious timber resources. Sourced exclusively from certified plantations, DEDON’s natural-finish premium teak represents the highest standard of quality. Rich with natural tannin oils, the wood is exceptionally long-lasting and durable. Without any additional surface protection, it is resistant to rain, strong sunlight, freezing conditions and fluctuating tem- peratures. If allowed to age naturally outdoors, it will eventually acquire a beautiful, soft, silver-gray patina. To retain its original golden hue, DEDON teak oil can be applied at least twice per year.

SLING

DEDON works with a top-quality sling material that is lightweight and flexible yet highly robust. Able to elongate under load while retaining its original shape, the material has excellent tensile strength and a long life expectancy. Mold-resistant, flame- retardant, acoustically absorbent, exceptionally light-stable and able to withstand extremes of tem- perature, the material is also 100-percent recyclable.

UPHOLSTERY

DEDON relies on some of the world’s most ad- vanced textile technologies to create cushions and upholstery of unrivaled comfort and performance. DEDON fabrics come in a wide range of colors and have a soft, natural touch. Suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, they are quick-drying, easy to maintain and specially coated to make them splash- and UV-resistant. Encased in molded polyurethane foam, with belting for extra comfort, the core of each DEDON upholstery piece is protected by a water- repellent and breathable polyester covering. The foam core and synthetic fiber padding of DEDON cushions is surrounded by a spun-bonded wrap, also water-repellant and breathable, that ensures maximum comfort and outdoor-readiness.

CERAMICS

DEDON sources only the highest-quality ceramics, produced by two different manufacturing process- es. Ceramic products made using mold-casting techniques reflect DEDON’s passion for traditional craftsmanship. Ceramic tabletops derived from specially-cut mineral-composite slabs reflect DEDON’s drive for the most innovate, high-per- formance materials. Twice as strong as glass, the tabletops are resistant to UV-rays and scuffing. All DEDON ceramic products are frost-proof, pore-free, non-absorbent and resilient against scratching, abrasion and indirect tensile stress.

DEDON ECOCYCLE FIBER

KEYFACTS: DEDON EcoCycle Fiber

• Is produced with polyethylene from renewable agricultural resources (sugarcane-derived ethanol). • Uses a raw material that has a negative CO 2 footprint. • Can be fully recycled through existing recycling systems at the end of its product life-cycle.

MADE WITH THE HELP OF NATURE

Derived 90% from renewable plant-based resources, DEDON EcoCycle Fiber is an eco-logically-conscious alternative to conventional, fossil-fuel-based products. It offers the same luxurious look and feel as standard DEDON Fiber, along with the same unrivaled strength and weatherability. With EcoCycle Fiber, DEDON proves the viability of an innovative sourcing procedure for renewable raw mate- rial. DEDON EcoCycle Fiber is made with polyethylene derived from sugarcane ethanol. Extruded at DEDON’s own state-of-the-art production facilities in Northern Germany, EcoCycle Fiber meets the same exceptional standards of quality—and is protected by the same warranty—as DEDON Fiber. And like them, it is fully recyclable through existing systems at the end of its product lifecycle.

Available from 2021 for the SEALINE collection by Jean-Marie Massaud, EcoCycle Fiber will eventually be introduced for all DEDON woven collections.

Natural-finish teak Consisting of beautiful premium teak sourced from sustainable plantations, the tabletop is rich with natural tannin oils, offering great durability in extreme weather conditions. Wash with natural soap dissolved in warm water. Mineral composite These innovative, long-lasting mineral-composite tabletops are waterproof, extremely hygienic and highly resistant to frost, UV-rays and abrasion. Clean with soft cloth and warm water. Ceramic The tabletop is made of Monolite Ipergres ® , a frost- proof ceramic that is non-absorbing and highly resistant to impacts, scratches and abrasion. Clean with a soft cloth and warm water.

Single-layer tempered glass Offers increased resistance to temperature changes as well as excellent resistance to bending, impact and shock. To clean a glass tabletop, use a soft cloth, warm water and a gentle cleanser if needed. High pressure laminate (HPL) A non-toxic material that is highly resistant to impact, mechanical stress, moisture and steam. TEAK

DEDON COVERS — HANDLING AND CARE

THE BEAUTY OF TEAK

Teak is one of the world’s most valuable timber resources. Furniture made from beautiful premium teak, sourced from sustainable plantations, is rich in natural tannins and is able to withstand even extreme weather conditions over an exceptionally long life- time. The wood is resistant to rain, strong sunlight, freezing conditions and fluctuating temperatures. These qualities make it particularly well-suited to long-term outdoor use. Made exclusively from premium teak, DEDON teak furniture requires no special maintenance besides other than periodic cleaning. If allowed to age naturally outdoors, it will eventually turn to a soft, silver-gray as surface pigments fade. As this is a natural process, the silver-gray color may appear irregularly, especially at first.

DEDON furniture covers are made of Weathermax ® , a heavy-duty, 100%-solution-dyed polyester fabric. Weathermax ® is water-resistant and UV-resistant, with outstanding breathability and durability. Because of their superior breathability, DEDON covers minimize dampness, heat build-up and condensation, helping to prevent mold and mildew from forming on your furniture. Tailored to fit perfectly over their corresponding products, DEDON covers feature zippers for easy draping as well as elastic straps and loops (product- specific) for securing them in windy conditions. Clean covers with warm water and a gentle upholstery

To retain the wood’s original, golden hue, use DEDON teak oil at least twice a year. To clean it, use a DEDON cleaning agent once or twice a year. To remove any rough grain and restore the wood to its smooth finish, lightly sand the surface from time to time. Allow your teak furniture with cushions to dry before using covers. To prevent mold and stains, DEDON recommends not to use covers for tables with teak tabletops. Cushions that are in contact with new teak can oc- casionally show signs of teak staining. This is caused when the natural pigments and oils within the new teak bleed out over time, leaving a red-brown stain on the cushion fabric. To remove the teak stains, wash the cushion covers at a lukewarm temperature (30°C) with a mild soap.

cleaner. Take care to prevent puddles of water from forming on the cover’s surface. Before storing, allow them to dry by hanging them using the featured strap (not part of all covers). Do not bleach or iron. All cushions should be dry before applying DEDON covers. For longer periods, e.g. during wintertime, we recommend storing your cushions in a dry place indoors.

Teak bleeding may leave stains on the ground around the furniture as well. Any damage caused by teak bleeding is not covered by DEDON warranty.

CUSHIONS YOU CAN LEAVE OUTDOORS

Mix of foam

TEN FABRIC STYLES TO PLAY WITH

DEDON relies on some of the world’s most advanced textile technologies to create cushions you can leave outside. Our high-quality acrylic materials are UV- resistant and specially treated to be splash-resis- tant, all with no loss of comfort. The foam cores, created exclusively for DEDON, and synthetic fiber padding are surrounded by a water-repellent, breath- able, spun-bonded wrap. After a rain shower, allow your cushions to dry so as to protect them from mold stains. We recommend storing your cushions for the winter or when not in use for long periods, and using covers to keep them at their best. Before storing, make sure they are completely dry. Our materials meet the highest standards of quality for outdoor usage. All fabrics are quick-drying and easy to maintain. DRY+ CUSHION CONSTRUCTION Dry+ cushions offer enhanced rain protection. Cushion cores are wrapped in a breathable polyester interlayer with a very high water-repellent rating of 10,000 mm. All cushion cover fabrics are specially treated to be stain- and water-repellent. Each of the ten fabric styles in this catalog has a distinctive weaving structure that gives it a look and feel all its own. While any one of these fabrics is an ideal covering for cushions large or small, it’s the opportunity to combine them that makes the DEDON collection so special. Play with textures. Mix the summerly lightness of COOL with the tweedy robustness of GLAN. Create subtle differences of shade by working with multiple fabric structures in the same color. The flexibility and creativity long associated with the finest indoor fabrics can now be enjoyed under the open skies.
