AT HOME IN THE WORLD: SAYULITA REPORT

Keep exploring, and the world keeps offering new things to discover. Our latest find? Sayulita, Mexico, an easygoing surf haven and meeting place for dreamers.

T ravel is like a second home to us, so familiar that we simply follow our instincts. When a friend first mentioned Sayulita, for example, we knew we had to go. And it wasn’t long be- fore we knew where to go—Teitiare, a boutique hotel run by fashion photographer Anne Menke and her husband, Johann Ackermann. The couple built it as a place to raise three boys, receive guests and surf. Anne, who splits her time between Sayulita, New York and trips around the world to shoot for bespoke magazines and books, even founded an eco-minded international school nearby, ensuring a good education for her sons as well as great surfing. The fishing village of Sayulita charmed us with its little streets and family-owned shops and restaurants. We couldn’t help but think of Ibiza as it was many years ago. But the surroundings—tropical jungles, crashing Pacific waves and surfer beaches with evocative names like Playa de los muertos—could only be Mexico. It was the ideal setting for a DEDON photo shoot, and we had a world- class photographer on hand. Fun and full of energy, Anne likes to involve friends and family in her shoots. The photos, which com- bine beach atmosphere with elements of Mexican architecture, are truly authentic, a result of following our instincts and taking a route less travelled—characteristically DEDON.

NEW 2019 Our elegant and easy new BELLMONDE collection made its first journey, traveling with us to Mexico.

In his relentless quest for elegance and lightness, renowned French designer Jean-Marie Massaud has developed many award-winning collections for DEDON. His latest creation, SEALINE, combines rope and fiber with a teak structure for a collection suitable to every season and latitude.

“DEDON is the expert for all outdoor scenarios, whatever the season or latitude. With SEALINE, we combined solid teak, rope and fiber to create a collection that would feel at a home anywhere, at any time of the year.”

SEALINE: A COLLECTION WITH TIMELESS APPEAL

You already have a long and successful history with DEDON. What were you trying to achieve with this new collection, SEALINE? When we think of outdoor living, we tend to think of summertime, hot sand, the beach, the swimming pool. But keep in mind that DEDON is the expert in all kinds of outdoor scenarios. And so the idea was to propose a collection that would be elegant, comfort- able and appropriate in every season and every latitude, whether on the terrace of an African Lodge or the deck of a yacht in the Scandinavian fjords. That’s also why the collection had to be com- pact. You can use it on a big balcony in Hamburg, for example, or the not-so-big terrace of a Miami high-rise. The point is to create an easy-chic experience rather than a total look. For me, SEALINE works perfectly in combination with two of my previous collec- tions, SEAX and SEAYOU. What was the design process that led to SEALINE? My design process is a kind of visualization. I try to picture the context, to see it in three dimensions—and really, to see it in four dimensions, because it’s very important to consider the element of time, especially on a project like this. When you’re working with a rare and important wood like teak, there’s a responsibility to cre- ate something that lasts, both physically and aesthetically. It’s not about trends. And so the design had to be simple, refined, elegant and cool—not demonstrative or arrogant but, in a way, timeless. As I worked, I had the image of a lakeside house in mind, a place where a long-lasting, high-quality collection would be appropriate not only now but also many decades from now.

Was there any particular inspiration behind the design? I’ve always been inspired by the sailing world, where elegance is linked to efficiency. Think of those wooden racing boats from the America’s Cup of the 1950s. You need strength, durability, quali- ty. At the same time, the demand to turn wind into speed means there’s no place for anything beyond what is necessary. The teak wood and woven sailing- rope of SEALINE both derive from this world of elegance. The weaving invokes DEDON’s heritage, while the wood gives warmth as well as strength and resistance. Simple. Refined. Natural. Timeless. We start with benches made of teak for a feeling of solidity that reflects the purpose, which is to last a long time. And then, as with a sailing boat, everything is con- nected and held together with the best die-cast aluminum pieces. This ensures resilience and durability and makes the collection easy to maintain, even fifty years from now. And so, the maritime construction becomes a part of the design language. It’s not just an aesthetic choice but an expression of quality and sustainability. The same is true of the nautical rope (or large DEDON Fiber), which we weave into a sort of basket around the bench. Finally, instead of stiff cushions, we add soft pillows to this basket, enveloping the user in comfort. Let’s talk about the design language. How would you de- scribe it?

RILLY DAYBED BY GAMFRATESI: AN ISLAND OF SUBTLE SHADING

Exclusively for Salone del Mobile, DEDON previews the canopied double daybed from the new RILLY collection by GamFratesi. The daybed’s vertical weave of rope offers privacy and shade while creating a modern, graphic effect that characterizes the entire collection.

The overall effect of RILLY is one of lightness combined with so- lidity. Rope and powder-coated aluminum come together in what the designers describe as “an architectural union of materials, in a definite and honest way.” RILLY is DEDON’s second collection by the celebrated Danish-Italian design duo of Stine Gam and Enrico Fratesi. The double daybed would seem to have an extra significance for the pair, partners in life as well as work. According to Sonja van der Hagen, DEDON’s Chief Creative Officer, “GamFratesi have designed a collection that manages to be beauti- ful, inviting, intimate and comfortable by paying careful attention to detail and great creativity. Two core elements that are shared—and highly appreciated—by DEDON and DEDON customers.”

RILLY by GamFratesi takes a fresh approach to DEDON’s outdoor heritage. In place of traditional weaving techniques, RILLY fea- tures parallel vertical strands of maritime rope or DEDON Fiber. The result is a collection of friendly forms with distinctive faceting and a contemporary graphic quality. A canopied double daybed, on preview at the Salone del Mobile, perfectly conveys the spirit of the whole collection. The RILLY double daybed is an island of subtle shading. Place it anywhere to enjoy the surroundings in a comfortable and shel- tered space. Aside from the voluminous fixed canopy, the first thing one notices about the double daybed is its grand size. With a mattress measuring 190 by 160cm, there’s room for friends and family to pile in. During the day, the canopy offers privacy and protection from the sun. At night, one can easily imagine sleeping here under starry skies.

H umans have an innate desire to be in and with nature. They also have a desire for comfort, cosiness and cocooning protection. Sebastian Herkner, leader of a new generation of global design talents, has an unusual gift for harmonizing these desires. His latest collection, MBARQ, is a masterful demonstra- tion of his approach. With its powder- coated aluminum frame and open weave of DEDON Fiber, MBARQ is lightweight, strong and exceptionally resilient to all weather conditions. At the same time, the collec- tion transcends mere functionality. Its expansive wrap-around forms and artful coloration invite users to embark on a journey of the spirit, the soul, the imagination. Herkner describes MBARQ as a seating system for outdoors with a variety of backs. The generous scale of the collection is conveyed by the 3-seater debuting at the Salone del Mobile. Its towering backrest, subtly organic in shape, envelopes users in privacy and protective comfort. Place two 3-seaters across from each other to create a uniquely intimate social space, one that invites guests to embark on those long, dreamy conversations that continue deep into the night. Working together with master colorist Giulio Ridolfo, Herkner and DEDON developed the rich, warm Chestnut weave on display in Milan. Adopting the approach of textile designers, the team combined three different colors into a single colorway. The open weave of the seating emphasizes this approach. As Herkner ex- plains, “The collection plays with materiality and harmony.” This is especially true when MBARQ is combined with ceramic side tables from Herkner’s award-winning MBRACE collection. The result, Herkner agrees, may best be described as poetic. MBARQ: COMFORT, PRIVACY, POETRY.
